On the VS30, a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel and a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol four joined the range, the petrol being a US-market specialty you rarely see in Europe. Rear-wheel drive is standard; a factory 4x4 system was optional and is prized on conversion vans. Diesels use AdBlue/SCR exhaust after-treatment, which is relevant for both emissions compliance and running costs.

Reliability and common problems
Sprinter reliability is good when the diesel is maintained on schedule, but there are well-known weak points. The OM642 V6 is durable yet suffers from oil cooler seal leaks and a fragile intake manifold with plastic swirl-flap linkages that can break and be ingested. SCR/AdBlue faults, NOx sensor failures and the resulting limp-mode countdowns are the most common frustrations on emissions-era vans. High-pressure fuel pump and injector wear appear on neglected examples, and rust around the rear wheel arches, lower doors and sliding-door track is the classic Sprinter body complaint on northern-US vans. The 7G-Tronic gearbox is generally tough but benefits from periodic fluid service that many fleets skip. Ask specifically about the timing chain history on high-mileage V6 diesels.
How US versions differ
US Sprinters run amber side markers, US-spec headlights, mph-primary instruments and, on many vans, a US-market petrol engine option that is uncommon here. Telematics and some driver-assist calibrations are set for the American market. The mechanicals are shared with Europe, which is a big advantage for parts and workshop familiarity, but lighting and instrument details will need attention for German registration.
From US purchase to registration
The process runs in a clear sequence: select the specific van and agree terms; verify the VIN, build plant and history (Carfax/AutoCheck plus a physical inspection); use secure escrow rather than direct wire transfer; arrange ocean freight (container for high-value conversion bases, RoRo for plain fleet vans); clear customs on arrival with the correct commercial-vehicle classification; present the van for TUEV and, where needed, individual approval (Einzelabnahme); then complete German registration. Commercial vans have their own customs tariff heading, so classification and paperwork accuracy matter here even more than on a passenger car.
Costs, duty and taxes at a glance

Two charges are separate. First, the EU import duty: for a used vehicle of provable US origin, the preferential 0% rate can apply under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461 (in force since 1 July 2026, requiring direct transport, and running until 31 December 2029). Because this Sprinter carries a neutral origin flag, the outcome depends on the actual assembly plant shown by the VIN: some US-market Sprinters are assembled in North Charleston, South Carolina, which can support US origin, while others are built or completed abroad. Where US origin cannot be proven, the standard third-country customs rate for the relevant commercial-vehicle heading applies, and that rate for goods vehicles can be higher than for passenger cars.
